Rheology study of ballast-sleeper interaction with particle image Velocimetry (PIV) and discrete element modelling (DEM)

Ballast rheology is a phenomenon that describes movements of ballast particles due to the discrete nature, which eventually leads bed fluid deformation after long-time service. In most cases, main reason track irregularity some defects, e.g., hanging sleeper and mud spots. Therefore, it significant confirm mechanism, not only benefits for alleviating prolonging service providing safe transportation, but also provides an innovated means accurately calibrating element method (DEM) models. Towards this aim, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) utilised study through measuring particle displacements in single push test (SSPT). The results are compared with those from DEM SSPT model, model calibrated. Results show PIV effective technical calibration. This helpful researchers build more precise models, further theoretical methodology construction innovations.
